DJ and MC at Seascape Beach Resort

At Seascape a company dinner, a wedding or a birthday weekend can use two places: a lawn on the bluff above Monterey Bay and a wide, low ballroom indoors. I set up sound in both, hold the microphone and run the timeline, so the day moves without you steering it.

Aptos, Monterey Bay

A beach resort
on Monterey Bay

Seascape Beach Resort is forty-plus acres of suites and villas overlooking Monterey Bay in Aptos, on the Santa Cruz County coast between Capitola and the Pajaro River. The area was first planned as a seaside community in the 1960s, and the resort itself went up in the 1990s. It feels like a beach house that grew: people stay over, walk down to the sand, and come to the party already relaxed.

That changes the event. Guests can stay on the property, so the music can start before the main day (the resort offers welcome bonfires and farewell brunches) and the big night doesn't have to carry everything alone.

The coast has its say too. Out on the bluff lawn there's nothing between the microphone and the ocean air. Indoors, the shape of the ballroom decides where speakers and lights can go. You may also see it called Seascape Resort, or Seascape Resort Monterey Bay. Same place.

The spaces

A lawn by the ocean,
a ballroom indoors

01

Seascape Ballroom

The main indoor room: 4,000 square feet, 50 by 80, with a ceiling that runs from about nine and a half to a little over eleven feet. It divides into three sections. A room this shape wants speakers placed for even coverage, not volume from one end.

02

The Bluff lawn

The outdoor ceremony site, a 100 by 70 foot lawn above the bay with a terrace attached. Open air with the ocean behind you means a second sound setup, a speaker facing the chairs and a wireless mic that can handle a breeze.

03

The Island

A smaller outdoor ceremony site listed by the resort. Ask whether it's available for your date. A small site gets a compact setup, kept out of the photos.

04

Smaller banquet rooms

One of them has its own terrace. They suit a rehearsal dinner, a company dinner or a small party. In a room that size I keep the setup small and the music at a level people can talk over.

How I set up here

Built for the bluff
and the ballroom

At Seascape the plan comes down to wind on the lawn, the shape of the ballroom and the music cutoff.

01

Two setups, not one moved

The bluff lawn and the ballroom each get their own sound. The lawn setup is in place and tested before guests arrive, with the entrance music cued, and the ballroom is already live when they walk in. Nothing gets dragged across the property in front of your guests.

02

A mic for ocean air

Out on the bluff, whoever is speaking goes on a wireless microphone, the speaker points at the guests, and a backup is set up and within reach. One of my reviews is about exactly that: a mic failed in the wind and I switched to the spare.

03

Filling the ballroom

At 50 by 80 under a low ceiling, the ballroom shouldn't be blasted from one end. I place speakers so dinner tables can talk and the dance floor still feels full. If the room is divided for a smaller group, I size the setup to the section you're in.

04

The clock, worked backwards

Amplified music is allowed at Seascape, with limits, and the times aren't published. So I ask for the cutoff for your exact space, because the ballroom, the terrace and the bluff lawn may not share one. Then I build the timeline back from it, so the dance floor gets its full stretch.

No planner needed

You don't have to
hold the day

By the time I arrive I already know your event. We've done the planning questionnaire and the music calls. I have your must-plays, your do-not-plays and the exact versions of the songs you love, and I know the order of the day.

From there I'm the MC as well as the DJ. Every announcement, entrance and toast comes from me, so nobody hands you a microphone or asks what's next. I arrive early, carry backup equipment and sort problems out before anyone notices. If you have no planner, the music, the microphone and the timing are still handled. The questions below go to the resort from me, not from you.

Lighting

Color and depth
after the daylight goes

Under a ceiling that low, light does a lot in the Seascape Ballroom without needing height. Uplighting along the walls gives the room color once the sun is down, dance-floor lighting marks where the party is, and a monogram or pattern can be projected onto a wall or the floor.

Lighting is an add-on you choose in the instant estimate. I check with the resort before promising any effect like fog.

More than weddings

Meetings, milestones
and long weekends

Seascape hosts corporate meetings, conferences and retreats alongside weddings and social gatherings, and I play the celebrations that come with them. A conference dinner that turns into a dance floor. A holiday party. A milestone birthday where the whole family stays over. A fundraiser, a mitzvah, a rehearsal dinner in one of the smaller rooms.

When guests stay on the property, the edges of the event matter as much as the main night. A Selector Session fits a stay like that: a set of my own programming for a welcome party, a cocktail hour, a dinner or an after-party. And on a retreat, The Journey (a live sound bath that flows into a facilitated ecstatic dance) can be its own gathering.

Good to Know

Questions about a DJ
at Seascape

Have you DJed at Seascape Beach Resort before?
I have. The photo on this page is from my own event at Seascape in 2012, a Hawaiian-themed party with a full dance floor. I know how the place is laid out: an outdoor ceremony lawn above the bay and a wide ballroom indoors. Details change over the years, so I still confirm the current rules with the resort before every event.
What time does the music have to end at Seascape?
Amplified music is allowed at Seascape with limits, and the times aren't published. So I don't guess. I ask for the cutoff for your exact space, indoors and out, and plan the night back from it so the last song is the one you chose.
Can you provide sound for a ceremony on the bluff lawn?
Yes. It gets its own setup, separate from the party indoors: a speaker aimed at your guests, a wireless microphone for whoever is speaking, the entrance music cued, and backup gear close by. If there's no outlet near the lawn, the estimate asks about power and adds a generator when one is needed.
We don't have a planner. Can you run the timeline?
The music side of it and every moment that needs a voice, yes. I'm the MC: entrances, toasts, the first dance, the final song. We plan it together ahead of time and I keep it moving on the day. The resort has its own event planning and catering for the room and the meal, and I coordinate with them so you aren't the go-between.
Do you play company events and parties at Seascape, or only weddings?
All of it. I play company dinners, holiday parties, birthdays, fundraisers and mitzvahs as readily as weddings, and Seascape hosts meetings and retreats as well as celebrations. Aptos is a drive from my base in Petaluma, so travel is added to the estimate, and you'll see it there before you commit.
