Apple orchard reception at Dawn Ranch in Guerneville with round tables, patio heaters and DJ Wayne Noel's canopy setup and speakers on the lawn

DJ and MC at Dawn Ranch

The dance floors I've played at Dawn Ranch in Guerneville were grass under string lights and apple branches, and every space is a short walk from the last. I bring sound to each of them, run the microphone and keep your company retreat, wedding or reunion moving, so you can stay at the table.

Guerneville, Russian River

A river resort
under the redwoods

Dawn Ranch sits on the Russian River at the edge of Guerneville, just off Highway 116 in Sonoma County, a little over an hour from the Golden Gate Bridge. Redwoods, a meadow, a creek and a very old apple orchard share the grounds, with cabins and cottages scattered through them. It feels more like a woodland camp than a formal estate.

People have been gathering here for a long time. A guest ranch opened on this ground in 1905, it became Fife's in 1978, and it runs today as Dawn Ranch, named for its dawn redwoods. The property closed after the 2019 flood and reopened in 2022. You'll still hear it called Dawn Ranch Lodge.

Most of the spaces are outdoors, short walking paths link them, and your guests can stay on the property. Trees and open lawn soak up sound instead of bouncing it back, so speakers have to be placed on purpose. And the music has to travel with the day, from the ceremony to the tables to the floor.

The spaces

Orchard, meadow,
bandshell and lodge

01

The Orchard

Rows of old apple trees between the Russian River and Fife's Creek, for ceremonies and celebrations. I've set up here for dinner and dancing: booth at the far end of the tables, a speaker either side, a wireless mic for toasts under the trees.

02

The Meadow

Open, pasture-style lawn with lavender along Fife's Creek and redwoods around it. Nothing out here reflects sound back, so coverage comes from where the speakers go, not from volume. It suits a ceremony, a cocktail hour or a bigger gathering.

03

Sycamore Green and The Bandshell

The venue pairs these two for dining and dancing. A bandshell gives the music a natural front, so I ask where the booth and the power sit in relation to the tables before I draw the layout.

04

The Lodge

The restaurant and lounge, and the indoor option for smaller groups, especially in the winter months. Indoors I keep the music at a level people can talk over, then build it as the plates clear, because dinner conversation and dancing can end up sharing a room.

05

The Garden and The Boathouse

The flower and vegetable garden hosts private dinners, and the historic boathouse by the river takes meetings and small events. Both call for a compact setup: music people can talk over and one microphone for a welcome or a toast.

How I set up here

Sound that follows
the walking paths

An outdoor property with several spaces needs more than one pair of speakers pointed at a dance floor.

01

A system where the vows are

The ceremony gets its own setup, separate from the reception: a speaker aimed at your guests, a wireless mic for the officiant and your vows, and the processional cued. In my photos here it's one of my speakers on a stand beside the benches, with a mic stand up at the arch.

02

Power among the trees

Out among apple trees, power is wherever it happens to be, if it's there at all. I ask the venue where power is for each spot. The estimate asks you too, and adds a generator when one's needed. One of my photos shows a speaker in the gardens with its own power box on the grass beside it.

03

Up the path before your guests

The spaces here are linked by walking paths, so I plan how the gear gets to yours. I confirm ahead of time where I can park and what the route to your space is. Then I arrive early, I'm set before your guests walk over, and backup equipment stays within reach all night.

04

Built back from the cutoff

Dawn Ranch doesn't publish an end time that I've found, and it's a property where guests stay overnight. So I ask for the cutoff and any quiet hours for your space on your date, then build the night backward from the answer. Dinner gets its time, the toasts land, and the floor gets its full stretch.

No planner required

You don't have to
hold the day

Before your event we go through a planning questionnaire, then planning and music calls: must-plays, do-not-plays, the exact versions of the songs you love. By the time I arrive I already know your event inside and out, and I know which part of the grounds each piece of it happens on.

On the day I'm the MC as well as the DJ. Every announcement, entrance and toast goes through me, and I'm the one who tells your guests when it's time to walk to the next space. Most clients never know what I quietly handled behind the scenes. You get to be a guest at your own celebration.

Lighting

String lights over
the apple trees

The lighting in these photos is mine. In the orchard that meant string lights overhead, above the tables and the floor, and color on the dancers once it got dark: blue, magenta and red across the floor.

Outdoors at night, light is what turns a patch of grass into a dance floor. Uplighting, dance-floor lighting and a monogram or pattern projection are all choices in the instant estimate.

Beyond weddings

Retreats, reunions
and holiday parties

Dawn Ranch hosts a lot more than weddings: company retreats and team weekends, family reunions and anniversaries, holiday parties, workshops, and full buyouts where your group has the whole property. I play private and company events of every kind, holiday parties included, and birthdays and milestone celebrations too.

A weekend here has room for more than one kind of music. A Selector Session fits a welcome party, a dinner in the garden or an after-party: a set of my own programming, up to four hours. The Journey, a live sound bath that flows into a facilitated ecstatic dance, can be its own event at a retreat or one part of a bigger gathering.

Good to Know

Questions about a DJ
at Dawn Ranch

Have you DJ'd at Dawn Ranch before?
Yes. The photos on this page are mine, from my own events here: receptions in the apple orchard, a ceremony in a shaded clearing, toasts on my wireless mic and full dance floors after dark. The property reopened in 2022, so I confirm the current layout and rules with the venue before every event.
What time does music have to end at Dawn Ranch?
I haven't found a published end time, so I won't quote you one. Sonoma County's tourism listing says the property is permitted for live music and amplified sound with limited restrictions, but the venue sets the actual hours. I get the cutoff for your space and your date, and the dance floor gets planned around it.
Can you do sound for an outdoor ceremony and the reception?
I set up twice. One system goes where the vows happen, with a microphone for the officiant and the two of you and your processional music ready. The other is already running at the reception, so there's music playing when your guests walk over.
We don't have a planner. Can you run the timeline?
Yes, everything that runs through the music and the microphone: entrances, toasts, a first dance, the last song. We build the timeline together ahead of time, I announce each moment as it comes, and I'm the one who walks your guests from one space to the next. Dawn Ranch says its own events team offers day-of coordination, so ask what that covers for your date.
Do you play events other than weddings at Dawn Ranch?
I play all of these: company retreats, team weekends, reunions, anniversaries, holiday parties and birthdays. The photos on this page are from weddings. For a dinner or a welcome party, a Selector Session often fits better than a full MC'd event. The instant estimate on this site asks what you're planning and gives you a price in a couple of minutes.
