DJ and MC at Slide Ranch

A day at Slide Ranch can start on an open bluff above the Pacific near Muir Beach and end in a round canvas yurt, and those two spots ask for very different sound. I bring a setup for each, run the microphone and the timeline, and keep your retreat, wedding or company day moving between them.

Muir Beach, Marin County

A working farm
on the edge of the Pacific

Slide Ranch is a nonprofit coastal farm and nature preserve of 134 acres, on a bluff above the Pacific inside the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It's about a mile north of the Muir Beach Overlook on Highway 1, and the ranch says it's about 30 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It began as a dairy farm, and it's been getting kids out into nature since 1970. The event rentals sit alongside those programs and support them.

What that means for an event: there's no ballroom. There are cliffs, wildflower fields, cypress trees, a teaching garden and animal pastures, with the ocean below. The ground is unpaved, uneven and sloping. The road in is Highway 1, tight enough that the ranch warns large vehicles about it. And it's an exposed bluff, so I plan for wind.

So the sound has to travel light and work hard. What I bring has to cross that ground, get set up once outdoors and once indoors, and sound right in both.

The spaces

Yurt, bluff,
meadow and deck

01

The yurt

A round canvas yurt at the bluff's edge with a clear skylight, a hardwood floor and a wood stove. My photos show my booth, a subwoofer and two speakers set up inside. A small round room with canvas walls wants tight low end and speakers aimed across the floor.

02

The terrace and bluff

Outside the yurt: a terraced lawn, a campfire area and the cliffside ceremony site. In my photos the ceremony rig is two speakers on tall stands, a draped table and microphones, beside rows of chairs that face the ocean. Open air swallows sound, so I aim at the guests.

03

Dome Meadow

The big open one: a coastal meadow with a geodesic dome for cooking and picnic tables, used for larger outdoor events and events with camping. There's nothing out here to hold sound in, so it gets its own speakers, and I ask early about power.

04

Farm-to-Table Center

A teaching building with a commercial kitchen, a deck that looks over the gardens and the ocean, and a teaching garden beside it. Good for a dinner or a cocktail reception. Deck music is background by design: one speaker, kept low, so people can talk over it.

How I set up here

Two setups,
carried over open ground

I bring the whole sound system to Slide Ranch myself. Every speaker, cable and microphone gets carried in and placed for the spot it's in.

01

Ceremony sound on the bluff

The cliffside ceremony site is open air above the ocean, so it gets its own rig, separate from the yurt: two speakers on tall stands, a wireless mic for the officiant and the vows, the processional cued. In one of my photos, string and flute players share the lawn with my speakers. That works fine.

02

Wind gets a backup plan

An open bluff over the ocean is hard on microphones. So out here a second microphone is already set up before anyone speaks, on top of the backup equipment I carry to every event. If one drops out, I switch, and most people never notice.

03

Carrying it in

Unpaved, uneven, sloping: that's how the ranch describes its own ground. So I arrive early, plan the load-in around the terrain, and ask the ranch ahead of time how close a vehicle can get. I ask about power at each spot too.

04

From dinner to the yurt

Your day can move from the bluff to dinner outdoors to dancing in the yurt. I keep dinner music at a level people can talk over, make the announcement that moves everyone, and have the yurt tested before they walk in. Then I count back from the cutoff the ranch gives me, so the dancing gets its full stretch.

No planner? Covered.

You don't have to
hold all of this

Slide Ranch leaves most of the day up to you. You bring your own caterer, and at least one listing says hosts handle their own setup and cleanup. That's plenty for one person to track. The music, the microphone and the timing come off your list.

Before your event we go through a planning questionnaire and planning calls: the order of the day, who speaks, the must-plays, the do-not-plays. On the day I'm the MC. I cue the entrances, introduce the toasts, tell people when it's time to walk to the next spot, and keep the event on its clock. And what the ranch doesn't publish, I ask.

Lighting

What light would do
in a round canvas room

The yurt in my photos has string lights along its rafters and a band of windows that lets the ocean light in by day. After dark it's a small round room, and a small room takes color well. Dance-floor lighting changes the mood the moment the dancing starts, and uplighting around the lattice walls would give the canvas a glow.

Lighting is an add-on you choose in the instant estimate. I check with the ranch first about what's allowed in a canvas structure, haze and fog effects especially.

Beyond weddings

Retreats, company days
and parties by the ocean

The ranch rents its spaces for weddings, rehearsal dinners, receptions and cocktail parties, company events and business meetings, retreats, workshops and performances. I play most of those. A company day that ends with dinner and a dance floor. A milestone birthday. A fundraiser. A welcome party the night before, or the after-party.

Two of my formats suit this place. A Selector Session is a set of my own programming, up to four hours, for a cocktail hour on the deck or a long dinner. The Journey is a live sound bath that flows into a facilitated ecstatic dance, and a round room with a skylight suits it. For a retreat or a multi-day event with camping, either one can be its own evening.

Good to Know

Questions about a DJ
at Slide Ranch

Have you DJed at Slide Ranch before?
Yes. The photos on this page are from my own events here in 2017 and 2018: ceremony sound on the bluff, and my booth, subwoofer and speakers inside the yurt. I know what the ground is like, what wind does to a microphone, and how a day moves between the bluff and the yurt.
What time does music have to end at Slide Ranch?
The ranch doesn't publish a music cutoff, and the listings that describe it say only that amplified music has some restrictions, indoors and out. So I don't guess. I confirm the limits and the cutoff with the ranch for your date, then build the timeline back from it so the last song is the one you chose.
Is there power for a DJ at the ceremony site?
I confirm that with the ranch before your event, spot by spot. The estimate asks about power, and if there's no outlet near the ceremony or the setup, a generator gets added. You don't have to work it out.
Can you play the ceremony and the reception in two different spots?
Yes, that's how I work here. One rig goes on the bluff for the ceremony, with a wireless mic for the officiant, and a second goes in the yurt for the dancing. Both are set and tested ahead of time, so the gear isn't moving while your guests are.
We don't have a planner. Can you keep the day on track?
That's a big part of what I do. We build the order of the day together on planning calls, and on the day I'm the MC: entrances, toasts, the walk from one space to the next, the last song. You get to be at your own event.
