A couple's first dance in the barn at Straus Home Ranch in Marshall, with guests watching from long farm tables under string lights

DJ and MC at Straus Home Ranch

Nothing here can lean on a stream or a last-minute download, so the whole library is loaded before I leave home for Marshall. When there's a ceremony I set up sound where the vows happen, on the bluff or in the garden, then MC and play the barn until the last song of a retreat, wedding or reunion.

Marshall, West Marin

A ranch above
Tomales Bay

Straus Home Ranch sits on the east shore of Tomales Bay in Marshall, on Highway 1 just south of Nick's Cove. A white farmhouse from 1864 with porches wrapped around both floors, a big red barn up the hill, eucalyptus and cypress for windbreaks, and pasture rolling down toward the water. The same family has held the land since 1941, and the ranch is tied to the start of farmland protection in Marin. (It isn't the creamery. That's a separate business on separate property.)

It's remote, and that's the point. The venue says a booking gives your group the whole ranch to itself. There's no cell coverage, GPS tends to pick the long way around, and the coast runs far cooler than inland, with fog possible from June through August.

The venue recommends shuttles for every event, the wind off the bay has opinions about microphones, and once everyone is up the driveway, the whole gathering is in one place. It feels like a private weekend on a working landscape, not a staffed event hall.

The spaces

Barn, bluff, garden
and farmhouse

01

The Barn

A renovated historic barn with radiant heat, timber posts, open rafters and a concrete floor. Dinner, toasts and dancing all happen in here. Wood walls and a hard floor throw sound around, so I aim the speakers at the dance floor and keep dinner at talking level.

02

Bluff ceremony site

A ceremony spot on a bluff over Tomales Bay, framed by eucalyptus and coastal cypress. Open air and bay wind, so it gets its own small system: one speaker pointed at the chairs and a wireless mic for whoever is speaking.

03

Garden ceremony area

The garden beside the farmhouse, with bay views, is the second ceremony option. Same ceremony system, different questions: where the nearest outlet is, and which way the chairs face so the speaker reaches the back row without blasting the front.

04

The Farmhouse

The restored 1864 farmhouse, with wraparound porches on both floors facing the bay. People get ready here, and it hosts small gatherings, meetings and breakout sessions. It's a shoes-off house, and a small gathering there needs one compact speaker, not a rig.

05

Open fields and pasture

Rolling pasture and open fields, used as outdoor event space and as the backdrop. Nothing out there reflects sound and power is an open question, so I ask the venue before planning cocktail-hour music or an additional sound zone on the grass.

How I run it here

Built for a ranch
with no signal

Once I'm up the driveway, nothing can be fetched. So it all arrives with me, backups included.

01

Everything offline

No cell coverage means no streaming and no pulling a request off the internet mid-song. Your must-plays, the exact versions you love and a deep library all come with me, stored offline. Requests on the night come out of what I carry (it's a lot). Send the unusual ones ahead and they'll be there.

02

Two setups, bluff and barn

Vows on the bluff or in the garden get a second setup of their own, with the processional cued. The barn has its own system, separate from the ceremony one, so the evening doesn't wait on me carrying gear over from the vows.

03

Bay wind and a backup mic

The bay pushes cool wind across the ranch. I arrive early, carry backup equipment and keep a spare microphone ready outdoors, so if a gust takes one out, the next is already set up. If there's no outlet near the spot you pick, the estimate asks about power and adds a generator when one is needed.

04

Timeline from the cutoff back

The ranch publishes quiet hours for overnight guests, not a music end time for events. So I get the real cutoff from the venue, then build back from it: entrances, toasts and first dance early, dinner you can talk over, a full stretch of dancing, and a last song that's the one you chose.

No planner? Still covered

You don't have to
hold the whole day

The ranch has no in-house catering and encourages you to bring an independent planner. If you don't have one, somebody still has to hold the clock, and out here there's no signal to text whoever's running late. For the music, the microphone and the timing, that's me.

Before the event we work through a planning questionnaire and music calls, so I arrive already knowing the order of events and who's giving a toast. I make every announcement, cue the entrances, put the mic in the right hand at the right moment, and keep the evening moving so nobody is guessing what happens next. You get to be a guest at your own celebration.

Lighting, if you want it

Light for timber
and open rafters

The barn is dark wood, timber posts and open rafters, and a room like that takes color well. Uplighting along the walls would warm it for dinner. Dance-floor lighting would mark where the party is once the plates clear. I can project a monogram or a pattern on a wall or the floor.

All of it is optional and added in the instant estimate. I confirm the barn's power with the venue before I plan any of it.

Beyond weddings

Retreats, reunions and
big birthdays

The ranch hosts far more than weddings: corporate and team retreats, workshops and wellness programs, birthdays, anniversaries and family reunions, for a half day, a full day or several days. I play those too. A company retreat that closes with dinner and a dance floor in the barn. A milestone birthday. A welcome party the night before, or a Selector Session, up to four hours of my own programming for hosts who want a sound more than a playlist.

For a gathering that wants something quieter than a party, there's The Journey: a live sound bath that flows into a facilitated ecstatic dance, as its own event or inside a longer weekend.

Good to Know

Questions about a DJ
at Straus Home Ranch

Can you DJ at Straus Home Ranch with no cell service?
Yes, and I plan for it. Nothing I play depends on a signal: the whole library, your must-plays and the exact versions you asked for are stored offline before I leave Petaluma. The farmhouse has Wi-Fi, but I don't build a night on it. Anything obscure, tell me in the questionnaire and it's loaded before the night.
What time does the music have to end at Straus Home Ranch?
The venue doesn't publish a music end time for events. What it does publish is quiet hours for overnight guests. Whether those hours also end the music in the barn is the first thing I ask the venue, before we set your timeline. I don't guess. Once I have the answer, I build the evening back from it so the dancing gets its full stretch.
Can you do sound for a ceremony on the bluff?
Yes. A ceremony there gets its own system, separate from the barn: a speaker for your guests, a wireless microphone for the officiant and the vows, and your processional cued. Wind off the bay is the thing to plan for, so a backup mic is set and ready. I also confirm with the venue that amplified sound is allowed at that spot and whether there's an outlet. If there isn't, the estimate adds a generator.
Do we need a planner if you're our DJ and MC?
A good planner earns their keep on a ranch where you bring in your own caterer and vendors, and the venue encourages one. But the music, the microphone and the timing of the evening don't need a second person. I'm your MC: entrances, toasts, first dance, last song, all announced and cued. A planning questionnaire and calls beforehand mean I already know your event when I arrive.
Do you play events other than weddings at the ranch?
I do. Company retreats, milestone birthdays, anniversaries and family reunions all book the ranch, and those are events I play. That can be a closing-night party in the barn, a Selector Session for a welcome evening, or The Journey when you want a sound bath and a dance more than a party.
